Chapter 18

Riding High

Once again, Genie found herself staring out the window of a bus, nervously waiting for it to pull off. She breathed a sigh of relief as it moved away from the kerb with only a smattering of people on board. Most of the passengers had been arriving for the day and had now disembarked looking forward to a day of pleasurable skiing. Genie doubted they would have as many thrills as Andrew and herself on the slopes.

They had jumped on the first bus to go, which was at least not heading back the way they had come, but weaving through the mountains and heading north, to Interlaken. Genie knew a lot of people travelled to Interlaken to start their holidays, so it should have good transport to get out of the area too. She relaxed a little before it struck her that their mission up to the GeneTech headquarters and all the danger involved had accomplished precisely nothing! She slapped her hands down in her lap and turning to Andrew next to her, exclaimed, “What now?”

Andrew smiled lopsidedly and said, “Well, I’m going to change my shoes,” exasperating Genie further. She had to admit he had a point though as she became aware of the ache in her legs. They had stowed their skis in a rack over their heads and had clumped onto the bus in their snow boots leaving puddles of melting ice under their seat. They proceeded to unclip their heavy boots, gasping at the relief from the pressure on their feet, and pulled on their comparatively cosy boots. As the excitement wore off, they both became aware of the tiredness enveloping them. They’d had no sleep, followed by a breakneck speed ski chase, and they both gently dozed off.

“Wachen Sie auf! Endstation!” Andrew and Genie jolted awake as the bus driver shouted down the aisle. Looking around slightly dazed, they found themselves in a busy bus station. Through the window, they could see several buses parked up, with people milling around. “Endstation, aussteigen hier bitte!” shouted the driver again.

The children stood up, and kicking their ski boots away under their seat, tramped off the bus, still feeling their exertions.

“Nice present of skis and boots for someone,” murmured Genie.

They disappeared into the press of bodies, feeling comfortable surrounded by people and no longer exposed. They headed out from the bus station and into the medley of shops, bars and cafes catering for holidaymakers. Andrew led the way into a restaurant, where they pushed themselves into a corner table, reassuringly hidden by the bodies of larger diners at the close packed tables. They still had some of their captor’s money to get through and immediately decided to have their favourite schnitzel and chips. Skiing man’s dinner, as Dad called it, Andrew remembered with a wince as he thought of his parents.

“Basel!” he announced, surprising Genie. She looked at him blankly. “Neumann mentioned it up at their base.” He involuntarily shivered. To cover it up, he played with the salt and pepper containers on the table.
